Spent more time than childhood me would have ever guessed staring at cows personal bits to try to gauge when they might calve. Thinking it will go Alice, Ben, Baxter. Current calf is in the middle, unsure of why they’re all staring at me, but wanting to be part of the group.
One of our core tenants is allowing all of the livestock the space to follow their instincts. Adele is the only cow we have who won’t eat out of our hands, and she also doesn’t hesitate to keep her babes away from us. The calf looks healthy, the afterbirth has been passed, and we are okay letting her be a wary mom.
The herd was kind enough to let us observe the new baby for approximately two minutes before walking away. Adele had a little black heifer (we think) calf today. Healthy, with long legs. Three more calves to go!
Attempting to work on the well this morning. The specks on the horizon begrudgingly got up to observe from a distance. Quite possibly the first time the cows haven’t demanded a front row seat to whatever we are doing.
We have goats now. Three wethers - Nigerian Dwarf Goats. They have two jobs: help with pasture management and see if we like having goats enough to get more. Two of the goats are absolute delights - one of them immediately launched in to a series of audacious escape attempts. The last of which came when I was filling their water, which is why this is a picture of chickens and not goats. Giving them space to settle in.
(Musk)melon field going absolutely crazy.
