Dexter Cattle

Dexter Cattle

I aim for calves in May and June, when the grass is lush and weather is warm. The cows will raise their calves within the herd, with heifers and steers being sold once they reach the age of 8-12 months. The intent is for the herd to remain small, the maximum number of breeding cows and heifers will not exceed 15.

While I make it a focus to bring in registered bulls, I currently have no plans to focus on registered Dexters. I believe I can continue to raise good, healthy, calm cattle without the registry. The goal is to sell steers to families who are looking to finish growing out cattle who have had a healthy start, and heifers to families who want to raise their own cattle from start to finish.

My goal is to have a calm herd I can work with, that respects personal space. Due to their size, a friendly cow can be dangerous. While there are times the cows can be higher spirited (weather changes, new pasture) I do not keep cattle that are flighty or mean.

The cows are primarily grass fed, with grain given occasionally and in small amounts. Usually when moving pasture or on cold days as a supplement to feed. They have constant access to minerals, though I rotate a few options through. The cows do have a specific moo that tells me they are missing something in their diet, and I work to figure out what that is.

In 2026, 6 cows and heifers will be bred for 2027 calves. I will have 3 steers and 1 cow for sale.
